OpenOffice prototype new design. Still sucks and looks more and more like MS Office

I wished I could find the quote somewhere online, but I remember saying Bill Gates several years ago that OpenOffice looked like Works 3.1. he couldn’t have been more on the ball, although Works looked even better. The boys over at OpenOffice have gone further now and prototyped a possible new UI for the next version.

Guess what.

Not only do they consistently stick to the typical open source icons with fat borders, excelling in their ugliness, but they have implemented a MS Office similar ribbon at the top. Keep trying, guys.

Elephants Dream

I might be late to the party with this one, but if you got 10 minutes, you definitely have to look at this ‘open source’ animation movie.

Elephants Dream is the world’s first open movie, made entirely with open source graphics software such as Blender, and with all production files freely available to use however you please, under a Creative Commons license.

The short film was created by the Orange Open Movie Project studio in Amsterdam during 2005/2006, bringing together a diverse team of artists and developers from all over the world.
