Add Highlight on Roll-over to Dock Context Menus

This simple but very useful addition highly improves the usability and contrast of the context menus in Snow Leopard. All you need to do is use a simple command in Terminal.app.

defaults write com.apple.dock mouse-over-hilite-stack -boolean YES
killall Dock

Nicer Lists Display in Dock

The display of the docks stacks can also be improved with a nicer list view with only one command to use in Terminal.app.

defaults write com.apple.dock use-new-list-stack -bool YES && killall Dock

If now I hadn’t been the massive cock I usually am on Monday mornings I would have uploaded a screencap with both tricks combined. See it for yourself instead after having applied both tweaks.

If you are on Mac X.5, AKA Leopard, and want to change the default login background, open Terminal (Applications -> Utilities) and type following:

cd /System/Library/CoreServices
sudo mv DefaultDesktop.jpg DefaultDesktop_org.jpg
sudo cp /Path/to/picture/you/want/to/use/image.jpg DefaultDesktop.jpg

Note: You will be asked to login with your admin credentials. To make things easier, for the last command, you can drag&drop the image in to the Terminal window.

If you feel even more creative, you can also change the default ‘Apple logo’ during boot with the free BootXChanger application. Return to the coloured Apple!
