Google Groups Is Dead? Worse, Could This Be The End of Newsgroups

It is interesting to note how what is Google’s main battle, the battle against spam, and once was one of the main reasons to switch to Gmail, now seems to become the end of ‘Google Groups’:

When you create a public group everything will go well for a couple days, at most. Without fail an onslaught of spam will start to come through your group – I’ve even seen it happen within the first day. It happens to every group and doesn’t matter how well you advertise it (or try to hide it). After having watched Google Groups for as long as I have I can only assume that there exists no spam filtering whatsoever. Or, if there is any, it’s the most grossly incompetent spam filter I’ve ever seen.

Or could it be that newsgroups, by their own very nature of relying on emails, are doomed themselves. Surprisingly the WordPress newsgroups do not suffer this problem. At least not that we can tell.

NASA, who have been doing some ace stuff online recently, have now launched their free NASA iPhone App [iTunes link]. The app is exactly what you expect: an easy an quick way to follow the news, new photos and videos of missions, explorations.
