Glitches in Games in Real Virtual Photography

Visual glitches in games have always existed and probably were first highlighted to non-hardcore gamers crowd when the “Enter The Matrix Game” hit public status and was literally littered with game glitches. But small annoyances and bugs can become an inspiration and part of creative process and Robert Overweg, a Dutch photographer in the virtual world who has exhibited throughout the world, has taken up the challenge to create a series of photos based on glitches in games.

Overweg dwells through the virtual worlds of first and third person shooter games. He looks into the similarities, differences and borders between the virtual and the physical world. Borders which are being tested and stretched by Overweg.

He sees the virtual world as a direct expansion of the “real” world, the virtual places where players come together in multiplayer maps are for Overweg the new public spaces of contemporary society. For him it is logical to document his experiences and research through his photography. While making use of the new possibilities the virtual world give him.

Apparently people do still use mouse pads, even in 2011. While most are more and more switching to trackpads on their laptop and laser and optical mice so good that they even work on glass, certainly ~~no-lifers~~ gamers love their super speedy and glidery [sic] mousepads.

When I saw the title of this on tintarwebz I was kinda excited about the video. Disappointment couldn’t have bigger because this is probably the most boring and underwhelming video mashup I have seen but somehow it still got 100s 1000s of views on the Tube.

Fans of time-lapse will certainly know the movie Koyaanisqatsi by Godfrey Reggio, also because of the awesome Philip Glass score. The concept of the movie has now been ported to GTA4 and the result is rather impressive. Note that the awesome Glass’ music was preserved and once more we can see how great the design in GTA4 and Liberty City is.

Germany will ban violent video games

Germany which has always been hard on violent video games (Unreal Tournament 2003 was blacklisted for a long time and only after a revision found the way back to the shelves, albeit with 18+ rating), is now preparing the final move to ban all violent shooters. Ministers of all 16 federations have agreed and the motion is expected to pass in parliament over the next weeks.
The law would result in no Call of Duty, no God of War, no Crysis, no World of Warcraft, no BioShock, no Uncharted, and no Grand Theft Auto. The law is hoped to come into effect before the country’s federal elections in September. The minister of the interior of Lower Saxony commented:

Violent games lower the inhibition level for real violence and spree killers have again and again played such before they did the crime.

Programming the deadliest AI

Programmers attending the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers symposium will attempt to program AI to destroy us all in a game of DEFCON.

Part of the symposium is a sort of “Turing Test” challenge, in which contestants program an AI to play a videogame. The objective is to try to trick a panel of human judges into thinking the AI is a human player. This year’s videogame is DEFCON, the brilliant nuclear war strategy game from indie developer Introversion. A group of talented programmers will pitch their DEFCON bot against enemy bots in a series of one-on-one thermonuclear chess games. The winner is the programmer whose bot successfully annihilates its opponents and racks up the highest death count. IEEE is offering a $500 prize to the deadliest DEFCON AI bot competition winner.

PWN or DIE has envisioned 8 video games that would be more fun with a zombie mode added to the game. On the list are Duck Hunt, Halo 3, Mario Kart, Madden, Sim City, Braid, Kung Fu, and Portal. A great idea, sadly poorly executed with only one photoshopped image for every game. Nevertheless cool.
